PRESS KIT

Essi Hirvonen (b. 1993) is a Helsinki-based double bassist, folk musician, and composer. She holds a Master of Music degree from the Sibelius Academy (2023), and her solo work centers on an in-depth exploration of the double bass’s sound and resonance. Hirvonen’s music is rooted in minimalism, sparse-note improvisation, and long-form structures — offering a calm, contemplative counterbalance to the fast pace of contemporary life. Hirvonen has performed as a solo double bassist since 2014, with concert series including Lopussa (2016), Kellot (2019), and Pyhät (2023). Since 2024, she has been working under a two-year artistic grant from the Kone Foundation. Her debut album Pyhät was released in November 2024.
